Minecraft creator Markus Perssons originally designed the "Steve" texture for a short-lived game project, known only as "Zombie Town", developed for the 2009 Java 4K Game Programming Contest.Despite this, Steve continued to sport the beard in merchandise and promotional material (including Ultimate) in the years following, culminating in the beard's official re-addition, nearly 13 years later, as part of a redesign of Steve's Java Edition in-game texture in August 2022. Ultimate is almost entirely taken from a long-outdated texture of the character only featured in very early versions of Minecraft, with his beard (often confused for a smile) being removed in September 2009, only four months into development. Steve's default design in Super Smash Bros.Steve is the only character in the entire series to not have any idle poses.Steve is the second playable character in Smash to have debuted on a home computer platform, following Solid Snake.Although Mojang Studios has been a part of Microsoft since 2014, Steve was introduced to Minecraft in 2009, when the company was known as "Mojang Specifications" and was fully independent.Steve is the first fighter in Smash history to come from an originally indie (independent-developed) game.Steve is also one of few playable characters to belong to a non-Japanese company, Microsoft, with the others being Banjo, Kazooie (both also from Microsoft), and Sora (from Disney).Being created in Sweden, Steve is the first non-Japanese fighter to originate from a non-Anglophone country.Steve is the first playable character created outside of Japan to not have had any involvement from Nintendo in his conception.Rool, and Banjo & Kazooie, who were created by Rare in the United Kingdom, and Dark Samus, who was created by Retro Studios in the United States. ![]()
